South Australia is in the enviable position of having a dedicated Music Development Office embedded within the State Government.

Established in 2014, the Music Development Office (MDO) focus is to develop policy to support, build and grow the local music industry.

As a specialist area of the South Australian Government through the Department of Premier and Cabinet, the MDO supports the sustainable development of the South Australia’s original contemporary music industry.

The MDO delivers support through grant programs, and strategic initiatives designed to develop creative intellectual property, business growth and industry development for South Australian artists, live music venues, event promoters and other music businesses across the ecosystem.

The 2023-25 MDO Strategic Plan: Supporting Revival focuses on cultivating a globally competitive, inclusive and sustainable ecosystem to underpin growth for the contemporary original music industry in South Australia.

In consultation across South Australian Government agencies and with key industry leaders, organisations and contributors, the team is also working through the next strategic direction from 2025.
